Soldier and his family

I liked this shot of the marine with his family, but the colors were just too loud. I decided that it was worth the effort to try and make it work.

STEP 2

I selected the child’s cloths to a new layer and changed it to grayscale. Then I command clicked the layer thumbnail to re-select it. I added a blank layer and filled it with blue. Then I used a layer blending mode and adjusted the opacity to create an overlay.

STEP 3

For the Marine’s shirt I filled the selection with a solid color on a separate layer. Filter > Noise > Add Noise set to Gaussian Blur and Monochromatic. Then I painted a shadow and highlight to the sleeve.

STEP 4

I increased the size of the star field on the flag to help the family stand out more. Then I blured the flag to add motion and push it back. All I need to do now is paint over the girls hair.
